Our vision: A transformative voice for the 21st century

In taking its name from Thomas Scattergood, the early 19th Century founder of Friends Hospital, the Foundation acknowledges the inspirational role he played in his community and in fundamentally changing the practice of mental health care to this day.

Thomas Scattergood raised his voice against the harsh treatment of the mentally ill of his time, and activated a sense of ethical responsibility and practical collaboration across the Quaker community to implement the humane treatment philosophy embodied in Friends Hospital. Although behavioral health in the 21st century is marked by different challenges particular to our time, a common thread still links us to Thomas Scattergood in our present need to advance creative strategies for change.

The Foundation is guided by the vision to “be Thomas Scattergood” for our time, driven by a disruptive sense of purpose to challenge and change how behavioral healthcare is viewed, organized and practiced.
